Maryfield’s history

Maryfield takes its name from a homestead. John Young McNaught named his homestead after his sister, Mary, and in 1889 he donated land for a school on the condition that the name be kept. It was, and the name passed on to the post office and then, in 1906, to the Canadian Pacific Railway station.

The community incorporated as a village on August 21, 1907. It sits about 8 kilometres west of the Manitoba border, south of the intersection of Highway 48 and Highway 600, and is a junction point on the Canadian National Railway, where the main line heading northwest toward Regina meets a branch line running southwest toward Carlyle and Lampman.

Maryfield is also home to a few well-known names. Hockey player Joel Laing was born and raised here, curler Val Sweeting grew up here, and professional wrestler and mixed martial artist Brock Lesnar lives in the village with his wife, fellow wrestler Sable.
